Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles
Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles
Overview
Corey Henry, a Hammond organist rooted in funk and gospel and a former member of the Brooklyn-based music collective Snarky Puppy, makes his debut leading his own band. Raised on church music, he was recruited into Kenny Garrett’s band as a teenager, kicking off his career. In recent years, alongside Snarky Puppy's activities, his 2016 album The Revival reached No. 2 on the US jazz charts, and he has also made a strong mark as a solo artist. In 2018, with a lineup of esteemed collaborators, he formed The Funk Apostles; their debut album Art of Love updates 70s soul/funk for the modern era, and that work opened doors to collaborations with Lauryn Hill and Vulfpeck. Additionally, most recently, at New York’s The Shed, in the Soundtrack of America program, he was chosen to perform as part of the ensemble by curator Quincy Jones. A rising figure in the vibrant contemporary jazz scene, he brings a highly anticipated performance with his own band.
