Overview
Starting piano at age 4, and jazz piano from age 9, and began performing as a musician from age 18 while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts. To experience the roots and culture of jazz, she moved to New York in 2008. Since then, she has been beloved by many jazz legends such as Hank Jones and Jimmy Cobb, and served as the first Japanese and the last regular member of the Roy Hargrove Quintet. In September 2020, in New York during the COVID-19 era, she became a victim of an Asian hate crime and sustained serious injuries, but with indomitable spirit and tireless rehabilitation made a remarkable comeback. Her journey was featured in the NHK Special “This Wonderful World — The Jazz Mecca That Fought Division,” broadcast in November 2021, which drew widespread response. Now Umino makes her debut at Billboard Live with the bold comeback album Get My Mojo Back, and invites you to savor a stage filled with vitality and joy to the full.
