Kariyushi58, a four-piece band whose sound blends Okinawan scales with rock and reggae and whose unadorned lyrics carry messages, has been loved across generations. Formed in Okinawa in 2005, they made their debut in 2006 with the mini-album “Koibito yo” (Lover, Oh). Their straight-talking song of gratitude to their mother, “Anmaa,” drew wide sympathy and earned them the Best New Artist Award at the Japan Cable Awards. This year marks their 17th anniversary since debut, and they continue to sing nationwide the Okinawa-born “shima-uta” (island songs) unique to the region. There is growing anticipation for what kind of performance they will bring to warm up their first Billboard Live show.
