Since their debut, Akiko Yano has continued to stand as a leading Japanese artist with a fresh, genre- and category-defying style, and Hiromitsu Agatsuma, one of Japan’s premier shamisen players who, while rooted in tradition, has carried out cross-genre and cross-border activities to spread “Tradition and Innovation” both domestically and internationally. The two have formed the collaboration unit “Yano to Agatsuma.” In March 2020, their first album, ‘Asteroid and Butterfly,’ was released—a one-of-a-kind work featuring folk-song arrangements overflowing with originality that drew widespread attention. The three—Akiko Yano, Hiromitsu Agatsuma, and synthesizer player Hideyuki Fukazawa—weave a precious live performance of a folk-song–inspired “new Japanese music,” to be enjoyed in an intimate club space.
