Five-time Grammy Award–winning bassist and singer-songwriter Esperanza Spalding (エスペランサ) has announced a Japan tour, her first in about seven years! Her work, honed within the lineage and tradition of North American jazz, not only encompasses a variety of instruments, improvisation, singing, composition, and poetry, but also weaves in dance, therapeutic research, storytelling, and even nurturing love across her roles as daughter, aunt, and friend. Over the course of her career, during which she has released eight albums to date, she has won a total of five Grammys, including Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her activities extend beyond music: in Portland, Oregon, she serves as co-founder and curator of Prismid Inc., a 501c3 organization that runs a workshop space, and at her dance company <Off Brand gOdds> and <Songwrights Apothecary Lab>, she directs performances, workshops, education, and therapeutic art research. This August, a collaboration album with Milton Nascimento, the living legend of Brazilian music, has also been announced.
