Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles
Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles
Overview
Corey Henry, a Hammond organist rooted in funk and gospel and a former member of the Brooklyn-based music collective Snarky Puppy, makes his debut leading his own band. Raised playing church music, he was tapped into Kenny Garrett's band in his teens, launching his career. In recent years, while continuing with Snarky Puppy, he earned a No. 2 spot on the US jazz charts with the 2016 album The Revival and has also established a strong solo presence. In 2018, with colleagues boasting illustrious careers, he formed “The Funk Apostles,” and their debut album Art of Love updates 70s soul/funk music for the modern era, opening the door to collaborations with Lauryn Hill and Vulfpeck. Additionally, recently at New York’s The Shed, as part of the “Soundtrack of America” program, he was selected to perform as a member by curator Quincy Jones. A rising figure on the vibrant contemporary jazz scene, he and his band deliver a highly anticipated set.
