J-Squad
Overview
A special band that brings together Japan’s cutting-edge jazz musicians who are active on the world stage, J-Squad, returns for the first time in five years. Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, who has released solo albums on the US Blue Note and Concord labels and attracted worldwide attention; Takeshi Obayashi, who, in addition to his own work with the “TBN” trio, also serves as the musical director for MISIA’s band; Kyoji Nakamura, a core member of the Japan–U.S. hybrid unit “New Century Jazz Quintet”; Keita Ogawa, who has performed with Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy and Banda Magda; and Tomoaki Baba, the saxophonist who played the protagonist’s sax in the animated film “BLUE GIANT,” are among the notable Japanese musicians taking part. They also served as the opening theme for TV Asahi’s “News Station,” and their tour behind the second album, “J-Squad II,” was a success and drew attention. As these five resume activity after several years, their heated, high-voltage performance is not to be missed.
