He has long been active as a producer, songwriter, and arranger, and is known as the driving force behind the Beach Boys' landmark album Smile. Beginning in childhood as a child actor, he displayed exceptional musical talent, and his career began after meeting Terry Melcher. He later deepened his friendship with Brian Wilson and went on to co-write many of the Beach Boys' classic songs, including Smile. While continuing to produce works that were acclaimed as a brilliant fusion of Hollywood film music and folk, he also worked on albums by Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, Little Feat, and others. In addition, he participated as a songwriter and arranger on the last album by Happy End, recorded in LA, and his connection with Japan runs deep, having profoundly influenced Haruomi Hosono and Eiichi Ohtaki. A lasting bond with Haruomi Hosono has been built, including onstage collaborations and participation in tributes, continuing to this day.
