Overview
Jazz-hip hop pioneers Digable Planets announce their long-awaited Japan tour.
Digable Planets, who burst onto the scene in 1993 with the Grammy-winning hit "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," are a trio consisting of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Craig “Doodlebug” Irving, and Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira. With jazz samples and lyrically poetic, message-driven rhymes, they blew a fresh wind into the early-1990s hip-hop scene.
Their debut album Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) was praised for addressing deep social themes, including the realities of urban life, and earned RIAA Gold certification, marking commercial success. In their follow-up Blowout Comb, they presented a spiritually and artistically charged work centered on Black Liberation, which had a profound influence on later hip-hop generations and Afro-Futurism.
From the 2000s onward, they pursued solo projects, but regrouped as a group in 2015. Since then they have performed live around the world, and released the live album Digable Planets Live in 2017. Their dynamic live performances with live instrumentation and refined staging have continued to garner renewed acclaim.
Even after more than 30 years since their debut, their innovative sound and groove continue to energize the scene across genres, so don’t miss this precious night to experience them live in a real space.
Note: The meet-and-greet originally scheduled has been canceled due to the artists’ circumstances. We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to it, and we appreciate your understanding.
