Grammy Award-winning bassist and singer-songwriter Esperanza Spalding has announced a Japan tour, her first in about seven years! Her work, honed within the North American jazz lineage and tradition, weaves together not only a variety of instruments, improvisation, singing, composing, and poetry, but also dance, therapy-research, storytelling, and even the cultivation of love in her roles as daughter, aunt, and friend. Having released eight albums to date, she has won five Grammys in total, including Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her activities extend beyond music: in Portland, Oregon, she serves as co-founder and curator of the 501(c)(3) <Prismid Inc.>, and with her dance company <Off Brand gOdds> and <Songwrights Apothecary Lab>, she leads performances, workshops, education, and art-therapy research. This August, a collaborative album with the living legend of Brazilian music Milton Nascimento is also slated for release.
