Born and raised in Maryland, USA, he began his career as a session drummer in New York in his twenties. He broke through by participating in James Brown’s “Ain’t That a Groove” and by joining King Curtis’s band, the Kingpins. From 1970, he served as Aretha Franklin’s bandleader, and since then has left his mark on countless artists’ works across genres, including Steely Dan and Miles Davis.
