Mavis Staples
Overview
Legendary soul and gospel singer Mavis Staples has confirmed that she will make a miraculous comeback to Japan with a performance at Billboard Live Tokyo. Hailing from Chicago, Mavis began her brilliant career at the tender age of 11 as a member of The Staple Singers, the group formed by her father Roebuck “Pops” Staples with his children. After her recording debut in 1953, the momentum of the civil rights movement helped her win enthusiastic support, and she produced hit after hit, including the No. 1 US chart-topper “I’ll Take You There.” Moreover, since the 1969 self-titled release, her solo career has flourished, and including the masterpiece “Time Waits No For One” born from her meeting with Prince, she has released 14 studio albums to date. In addition to her Grammy Award wins, she has been named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, making her an indispensable figure in music history and having influenced countless musicians.
A unique voice that has healed the world, hearing it up close on this incredibly precious stage will be a soul-stirring, special moment.
<Mavis Staples – Comment>
I can’t wait to come to Japan. It has been more than 40 years since I last visited! I’m really looking forward to returning to Japan and singing my Japanese folk song Soran-bushi, which we released in 1970.
