J-Squad
Overview
J-Squad, a special band that brings together some of Japan’s up-and-coming jazz players active on the front lines both domestically and internationally, makes its return after five years. Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, who has released solo albums on US Blue Note and Concord Records and attracted worldwide attention; Takeshi Obayashi, who, in addition to his own work with the “TBN” trio, also serves as bandleader for MISIA’s band; Kyoji Nakamura, a core member of the Japan–US mixed unit “New Century Jazz Quintet”; Keita Ogawa, who has performed with Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy and Banda Magda; and Tomoaki Baba, who played saxophone for the protagonist in the animated film “Blue Giant,” are the notable Japanese musicians featured. They were responsible for the opening theme of TV Asahi’s “News Station,” and their tour in support of the second album “J-Squad II” was a success and drew attention. As these five musicians resume activity after several years, their blistering performance is not to be missed.
