Singer-songwriter Saya Asakura, who has been conveying Japan’s songs and culture through the folk music she has cultivated since childhood and the Yamagata dialect, makes her Billboard Live Yokohama debut. Since 2012, she has incorporated the shamisen into songs such as “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” and “Genesis of Aquarion,” posting folk-flavored, Yamagata-dialect arrangements on video sites, which quickly became a hot topic. That buzz led to coverage and features across TV, commercials, radio, and newspapers even before her debut, drawing widespread acclaim for Japan’s top folk-singing ability, her Yamagata dialect, and her bright, smiling personality. She also contributed vocals to “未来未来” (“Mirai Mirai”), included on Spitz’s original album “Himitsu Studio,” released in May this year, Spitz’s first original album in three and a half years. Currently, a mini-album packed with jewel-like tracks heralding a new era, titled “大開幕” (Daikaimaku / Grand Opening), is released on June 14, and she is touring nationwide. Ten years after her 2013 debut with the self-penned and self-composed “Tokyo,” she continues to tour nationwide with her uniquely unmatched voice. A warm stage from someone who has twice been crowned Japan’s top folk singer is not to be missed.
