Since their debut, Akiko Yano has continued to stand as a representative Japanese artist with an innovative, genre-defying style. Hiromitsu Agatsuma, one of Japan’s leading shamisen players, builds on tradition while crossing genres and borders to spread “Tradition and Innovation” both domestically and internationally. Together, in the collaboration unit “Yano & Agatsuma,” they create a rare blend.

In March 2020, their first album, Asteroid and Butterfly, was released—a one-of-a-kind work that features folk-song arrangements infused with originality and drew wide attention. The three—Akiko Yano, Hiromitsu Agatsuma, and synthesizer player Hideyuki Fukazawa—weave a live performance inspired by folk motifs, offering a taste of “new Japanese music” in an intimate club setting.
