Overview

In recent years, as distinct music scenes have formed across Asian countries and more artists have shown global leaps, two acts from Korea and Taiwan that are at the forefront of these movements have been announced to perform in Japan. From Korea, the four-piece synth-pop band ADOY, and from Taiwan, the rising R&B singer Whyte (壞特 ?te) will take the stage at Billboard Live Yokohama. ADOY, who released their debut EP in 2017, won the Judges’ Special Prize at the Soul Music Awards 2019, where BTS took the grand prize; they’ve also played successful shows across Asia and Europe/America, symbolizing the current vigor of “K-INDIE” that stands apart from “K-POP.” While they exude a mellow, floaty vibe with an '80s flair, their modern, sophisticated pop sound has been drawing a wide range of listeners. On the other hand, Whyte, whose roots lie in jazz and soul, saw their 2023 second album Way Out win the Best Alternative Pop Album Award at Taiwan’s indie music awards, the Golden Indie Music Awards. It’s also fresh in memory that Whyte contributed to Elephant Gym’s fourth full-length album WORLD, released this year. Their smoky, warm vocal tone paired with a comfortable jazzy sound is sure to shine in an intimate club setting. This will be a rare, valuable Japan performance by two rising acts.
