Overview
With incisive lyrics and a vocal delivery that lays bare emotion, singer-songwriter Upi-ko—whose songs strongly resonate with many modern people living in an SNS-driven society—will make her Billboard Live Yokohama debut.
In the summer of 2021, wearing a job-hunting suit, a video of her singing Miyuki Nakajima’s “Fight!” on the streets of Shinjuku surpassed 4.5 million views. With a powerful, basso voice and performances that strip emotion bare, she has captivated modern listeners with original songs, cover songs, and the “I Tried Writing Lyrics and Composing While Being in Character” series, which portrays the feelings of anime characters. Her work—turning current events into songs, such as “The Cage of Anonymity,” a critique of online harassment, and “If I Switched Every Rifle in the World to a Guitar,” urging an early ceasefire in the Russia–Ukraine war—has strongly resonated in Japan in the Reiwa era.
Facing an era of uncertainty head-on, and gaining support not only from the youth but from a wide range of generations, her “songs” will resonate in the BillBoard Live space in ways we can’t yet know— don’t miss this unforgettable stage where the feelings she pours into her work intersect with the audience’s emotions.
