TOKU
Presents TYJ with Naoshi Numazawa (ds), Toshitaka Shibata (key) & Tomoaki Baba (sax)
Tribute to Miles Davis session
Overview
Miles Davis, the innovator who burned his name brightly into 20th-century music history and, from bebop through cool, modal, and electric, continually forged the future of jazz in each era. TOKU, who was captivated by Miles Davis's music in his youth and would later become a leading figure in the Japanese jazz scene, brings his first album in six years, TRIBUTES, and will present the “Tribute to Miles Davis session” at Billboard Live Yokohama.
This performance is a special session centered on Miles Davis's music from the 1980s—the era that drew TOKU most to his art—while also performing tracks from the latest album TRIBUTES. Born from TOKU's deeply personal feelings, this project will be a one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime stage made possible by this lineup.
The performing lineup includes: from the TOKU-centered unit TYJ, guitarist Yosuke Onuma, who has elevated Japan's contemporary jazz/guitar scene by weaving influences from cultures and music around the world into his own sound; bassist Kenji “JINO” Hino, who has refined his own musical perspective through ongoing exchanges with musicians around the world. Additionally, drummer Naoshi Numazawa, one of Japan's premier drummers who has supported numerous legendary sessions; keyboardist Toshitaka Shibata, whose superb playing crosses genres; and saxophonist Tomoaki Baba, at the forefront of the modern jazz scene, will take part. This star-studded, cross-generational gathering promises to be a rare treat.
It looks set to be a special night where the reverence for the giants who forged jazz history intersects with the creativity of musicians living in the present day.
